Slim without the gym

Fed up of paying a huge gym fee and seeing no results? Although the gym is great for some people it just doesn’t work for others. If you want to get slim and don’t want to use a gym.

  •  Don’t cut the dairy
Although the high levels of fat in dairy products make those who want to get slim without hitting the gym wary, it turns out that eating cheese, milk and other dairy products actually promotes weight loss. The study was conducted in Australia and the researchers suggest that the protein levels in dairy products may help people feel fuller for longer and therefore make them less likely to snack on calorific foods.

  • Variety
If you find yourself regularly going on health kicks only to find that in a few weeks or months time you’ve gone back to your old, unhealthy ways the likelihood is you’ve become bored. Doing the same exercise and eating the same foods is dull and even the most disciplined of people would struggle to maintain their new regime. Instead, try to eat new, healthy foods on a weekly basis and mix up what you eat. You should also do a variety of exercise, like running, dancing, Pilates and skipping. less

  • Join a club
If you want to slim without the gym then you might benefit from joining a club. Clubs are great because they’re social, they typically have equipment to lend to you and they are great for boosting people’s motivation. Before joining a club you need to first work out what sport suits you. If you like being in a team you could join a hockey club or a netball club. If you like working solo then a running, canoe or climbing club might be more suited to you. Remember, clubs typically offer beginners taster sessions and these will typically be free of charge, so always test out the club before you pay for membership. less

  • Have a treat in the week
When you’re super strict with yourself during the week it can be easy to let the rules from the week slip when the weekend arrives. Studies have found that this is true and that people who follow extremely healthy diets during the week actually lose weight more slowly compared to those who eat reasonably healthily all week. Therefore if you want to slim without the gym, have a treat now and then.

  • Fun equipment
Spending hours of your week silently running on a treadmill isn’t much fun, but exercise doesn’t have to be like that. There are loads of fun ways to work out. You could buy some gymnastics rings to work on your upper body and your core. Or if the rings aren’t for you buy a hula hoop to tone your waist area. If you get creative and have fun with your exercise you’ll find that you will be more motivated to stick at it and do more, which in turn will help you get slim and ditch the gym. less

  • Shopping
It is thought that the average woman burns 48,000 calories a year from shopping alone; that works out at around 385 calories per week. If you get that shopping-guilt almost all women feel when they wander into a store then don’t panic. Just think the money you saved from the gym can go towards this new dress or new pair of boots.

  • Stock up on the liquids
What do you do before a meal? Wash your hands and scout out a good TV show to watch during your meal? Well, although we think you should definitely still wash your hands before you eat, if you want to slim without the gym you should also try having a light soup before eating. This light course will help fill you up, yet is relatively low in calories. Having soup before your main course will also help you to stop yourself from overeating. less

  • Eat before you train
When you have a gym membership you will often find yourself rushing to the gym before or after work. You race there, have a workout and then grab a quick shower before shooting off. What you probably won’t do though is make enough time to eat before you go. This is important if you want to slim down because eating an hour before exercise ensures that you perform to full capacity during your training session and therefore you will burn a greater amount of fat.

  • Yoga
Grab your yoga mat and do some yoga poses three or four times a week. Although it doesn’t feel very strenuous yoga helps to sculpt your body and helps you get slim without the gym. Some great moves that help to tone include the Downward Dog Split and the Temple Pose. It may be best to go to a yoga class or get a yoga DVD if you’re not sure what you are doing, but remember the perfect pose we may see others doing might be a long way from what our own body can currently achieve.

  • Skipping
Thought your skipping days were over? Think again. Skipping isn’t just for eight year old girls. It's no coincidence that boxers, who are arguably some of the fittest athletes around, regularly perform skipping drills. Skipping is in fact a great exercise and there are lots of benefits. To make sure that your rope is the correct length for your height, stand on the middle of the rope and pull the handles upwards until the rope is taut. The handles should line up with the middle of your chest.

Melasma Treatment

In order to treat melasma, combination or specially formulated creams with hydroquinone, a phenolic hypopigmenting agent, azelaic acid, and retinoic acid (tretinoin), nonphenolic bleaching agents, and/or kojic acid may be prescribed. For severe cases of melasma, creams with a higher concentration of HQ or combining HQ with other ingredients such as tretinoin, corticosteroids, or glycolic acid may be effective in lightening the skin.

  •     Azelaic acid 15%-20% (Azelex, Finacea)
  •     Retinoic acid 0.025%-0.1% (tretinoin)
  •     Tazarotene 0.5%-0.1% (Tazorac cream or gel)
  •     Adapalene 0.1%-0.3% (Differin gel)
  •     Kojic acid
  •     Lactic acid lotions 12% (Lac-Hydrin or Am-Lactin)
  •     Glycolic acid 10%-20% creams (Citrix cream, NeoStrata)
  •     Glycolic acid peels 10%-70%

Melasma

Melasma is a very common patchy brown, tan, or blue-gray facial skin discoloration, almost entirely seen in women in the reproductive years. It typically appears on the upper cheeks, upper lip, forehead, and chin of women 20-50 years of age. Although possible, it is uncommon in males. It is thought to be primarily related to external sun exposure, external hormones like birth control pills, and internal hormonal changes as seen in pregnancy. Most people with melasma have a history of daily or intermittent sun exposure. Melasma is most common among pregnant women, especially those of Latin and Asian descents. People with olive or darker skin, like Hispanic, Asian, and Middle Eastern individuals, have higher incidences of melasma.

Causes of Melasma:

  • Pregnancy
  • Birth control pills
  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Uncontrolled sun exposer

How to treat Rosacea

There are many treatment choices for rosacea depending on the severity and extent of symptoms. Available medical treatments include antibacterial washes, topical creams, antibiotic pills, lasers, pulsed-light therapies, photodynamic therapy, and isotretinoin.
Mild rosacea may not necessarily require treatment if the individual is not bothered by the condition. More resistant cases may require a combination approach, using several of the treatments at the same time. A combination approach may include home care of washing with a prescription sulfa wash twice a day, applying an antibacterial cream morning and night, and taking an oral antibiotic for flares. A series of in-office laser, intense pulsed light, or photodynamic therapies may also be used in combination with the home regimen. It is advisable to seek a physician's care for the proper evaluation and treatment of rosacea.

  • Tropical Creams
  • Oral Antibiotics
  • Short-term tropical Steroids
  • Cleansers
  • Laser and intense pulsed light
  • Photo dynamic therapy
  • Glycolic Peels
  • Sun Protection

Rosacea

Rosacea is a inflammatory skin disorder in which the nose, the cheeks, the forehead, or the chin are chronically reddened and prone to breaking out acne-like welts. Unlike acne, however, rosacea never produces blackheads or whiteheads, and it rarely appears during adolescence. Instead, rosacea generally sets in during a person's thirties or forties, beginning with a mild pink blush that does'nt go away. If treated early the condition's may never progress any further or may even recede a bit. But in advance cases, it can cause permanent thickening and redness, especially on the nose.
Although women are more likely to have rosacea than man who do have rosacea tend to have more severe cases.

Symptoms
  • Redness across the nose, the cheeks, the forehead, or the chin.
  • Red pimples or welts.
                                                                        Root Causes
  • Repeated exposure to rosacea triggers(alcohol, wind, sun.. etc)
  • Low level of stomach acid
  • Constipation
  • Diet high in fat low in fiber
  • Food allergies
  • Nutritional deficiencies(especially vit. B)
  • Dysbiosis(imbalance of the gut bacteria)
  • Hormone imbalance

Some tips to stay fit this festive season !!!

You don’t want all those effort filled days on the treadmill go in vain. Neither do you want to offend the gesture of your friends and family during the celebrations. So what do you do? You don't have to shun sweets altogether, but being smart in your choice helps. The following 10 tips will help you balance the sugar intake so that the festive season doesn't build on your waistline.
  1. Pick savoury items for breakfast, and mid meal snacks. Opt for a poha or upma, instead of a sheera, whole wheat muffins, pop tarts or cereal in milk. These will keep you feeling full for longer and supply lesser calories and more energy.
  2. Keep a handful of grapes, granola bars, juices and fruit yogurt at bay. This becomes imperative on the days you anticipate force-feeding of sweets and other sinful indulgences.
  3. Shift your focus to maintaining your weight. In the process, you can allow a few slips and serve yourself half the carb portion sizes you would normally take to adjust the incoming load of calories.  For example, a palm full of marzipan can replace 2 bowls of rice.
  4. If the party is at your place, play the conscious host and try to nip calories wherever possible with low cal dips, and dressings. Include more fruits and veggies, lean cuts and whole grains.
  5. Choose appetizers which are not packed with calories, they normally fill you up. A shrimp cocktail, or a Caesar’s salad or canapés with a yogurt dip make great choices.
  6. For desserts you can pick chocolate dipped strawberries, or a sliver of warm fruit pie.
  7. Chew on every bite, enjoy the food. You will find yourself eating lesser than usual and yet feel satiated.
  8. Stay away from heavy cocktails. Pick wine, sparkling water or a low calorie punch. The trick is to slowly sip and nurse your drink. Take double the time to taste and appreciate it. You will drink lesser than the “bottoms up” routine.
  9. Make lunch and dinner at home protein dense meals with lentils or white meat (fish and chicken).
  10. No matter how busy the day, try and squeeze in a 10 min brisk walk or a quick jog to nullify the intake to output ratio.  Refrain from having the impression of “What can a 10 min workout do?” You will be surprised by its contribution.

How can you Care for acne ?

Think back to the three basic causes of acne and you can understand why the focus of both home treatment and prescription therapy is to (1) unclog pores, (2) kill bacteria, and (3) minimize oil. But first a word about...
Lifestyle: Moderation and regularity are good things, but not everyone can sleep eight hours, eat three good meals, and drink eight glasses of water a day. You can, however, still control your acne even if your routine is frantic and unpredictable. Probably the most useful lifestyle changes you can make are to never to pick or squeeze pimples. Playing with or popping pimples, no matter how careful and clean you are, nearly always makes bumps stay redder and bumpier longer. People often refer to redness as "scarring," but fortunately it usually isn't in the permanent sense. It's just a mark that takes months to fade if left entirely alone.

 Open the pores
Cleansing and skin care: Despite what you read in popular style and fashion magazines, there is no magic product or regimen that is right for every person and situation.
  • Mild cleansers: Washing once or twice a day with a mild cleansing bar or liquid (for example, Dove, Neutrogena, Basis, Purpose, and Cetaphil are all inexpensive and popular) will keep the skin clean and minimize sensitivity and irritation.
  • Exfoliating cleansers and masques: A variety of mild scrubs, exfoliants, and masks can be used. These products contain either fine granules or salicylic acid in a concentration that makes it a very mild peeling agent. These products remove the outer layer of the skin and thus open pores. Products containing glycolic or alpha hydroxy acids are also gentle skin exfoliants.
  • Retinol: Not to be confused with the prescription medication Retin-A, this derivative of vitamin A can help promote skin peeling.
Kill the bacteria
  • Antibacterial cleansers: The most popular ingredient in over-the-counter antibacterial cleansers is benzoyl peroxide.
  • Topical (external) applications: These products come in the form of gels, creams, and lotions, which are applied to the affected area. The active ingredients that kill surface bacteria include benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, and resorcinol. Some brands promoted on the Internet and cable TV (such as ProActiv) are much more costly than identical products you can buy in the drugstore.
Benzoyl peroxide causes red and scaly skin irritation in a small number of people, which goes away as soon as you stop using the product. Keep in mind that benzoyl peroxide is a bleach, so do not let products containing benzoyl peroxide leave unsightly blotching on colored clothes, shirts, towels, and carpets.

Reduce the oil
You cannot stop your oil glands from producing oil (unless you mess with your hormones or metabolism in ways you shouldn't). Even isotretinoin (Accutane, see below) only slows down oil glands for a while; they come back to life later. What you can do is to get rid of oil on the surface of the skin and reduce the embarrassing shine.
  • Use a gentle astringent/toner to wipe away oil. (There are many brands available in pharmacies, as well as from manufacturers of cosmetic lines.)
  • Products containing glycolic acid or one of the other alpha hydroxy acids are also mildly helpful in clearing the skin by causing the superficial layer of the skin to peel (exfoliate).
  • Masks containing sulfur and other ingredients draw out facial oil.
  • Antibacterial pads containing benzoyl peroxide have the additional benefit of helping you wipe away oil.

ACNE

Acne is an inflammatory skin disorder characterized by pimples, blackhead and whiteheads. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, acne has become the most commonly treated skin abnormality. Perhaps modern lifestyles contribute to this change statistics. For those that suffer from acne, it is not merely a cosmetic problem. The Consequences include emotional stress that can have strong impact on one's self esteem.
Acne often arises at puberty, when the body dramatically increases it's production of androgens(male sex hormones). These hormones stimulate the production of keratin(a type of protein) and sebum(an oily skin lubricant). The excess oil makes the pore sticky allowing bacteria to become trapped inside. Blackheads form when sebum combines with skin pigments and plugs the pore.
Whitehead appears when scales below the surface of the skin become filled with sebum.
Although proper skin care is important in the treatment of acne, acne is not caused by uncleanliness, but is more likely to be a result of overactive oil glands.

Tips For Your Skin

For Dry Skin
  1. Wash your face with lukewarm water in morning and evening and moisturize with a cream instead of a lotion.
  2. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen- as the UV ray's are prominent during autumn and will make your skin drier.

 For Combination Skin

  1. Try balancing lotion- they are neither too oily nor do they reduce the amount of oil you produce.
  2. Use anti-acne products with some good antibiotic gels like clindamycin or erythromycin.

For Oily Skin

  1. Use a mild foam cleanser twice a day. Choose an oil-free moisturizer and use soft tissue paper to get rid of the excess oil.
  2. Don't over dry your skin more than thrice a day- oil is a natural defence against external agents.

Tips for your smooth feet

  1. Wash your feet with Luke-warm water every morning and night.
  2. Scrub your heals and soles with a pumice stone after lathering them with soap.
  3. Cover your feet with a pair of socks or wear closed shoes if your heals tend to crack. Wear well fitted shoes to avoid any problems.
  4. Go for pedicure at least once in a month- it's relaxing and prevents corns and calluses from forming.

BRIDAL MAKEUP- TOP 10 Tips

Whether you are natural, glam or somewhere in between ~ using these 10 bridal makeup tips will unveil the most beautiful looking you!

  1. Don't change too far from your everyday look. You want to reflect the very best YOU on your special day.

  2. Be sure to gently exfoliate 3-5 days prior to your wedding day to ensure a smooth canvas for your makeup application.

  3. Go for a medium coverage type of foundation and use concealer sparingly - to avoid the 'makeup mask' type look.

  4. Using a silicone based face primer prior to your makeup application, will help control excess oils and perspiration throughout your special, busy day.

  5. If you don't normally wear makeup, try a fresh-faced minimal look - it will keep you from looking washed out in photographs.

  6. Consult a professional makeup artist and schedule a trial session. Planning your hair and makeup trial on the same day will help you get an overall vision of your soon to be wedding look. Discuss at least three looks and don't hesitate to share any areas that you're not completely satisfied with.

  7. Eyebrows! Thread your brows for a clean, face framing arch. The shape of your brows is essential to achieving symmetry. Never threaded before? Make sure to try it before your big day.

  8. Keep and overall look in mind; what will enhance your dress, hair and jewelry? Consider a day or evening look and avoid drastic colors such as greens, blues and orange tones. Try to think timeless and not trendy!

  9. Thinking about wearing false eyelashes? If you are comfortable in them - then definitely wear them! Wearing falsies will keep you looking bright eyed all day and avoid any unnecessary mascara runs (tear!). Never worn them? Have a pro apply them for fun, to see what you think!

  10. Make sure that you're picture perfect all day! Hire your makeup artist for touch-ups after your ceremony and keep oil blotter sheets, sheer pressed powder and your lip color for continued brilliance throughout the night!
